How to check your Claude usage
Last checked: September 15, 2026
On claude.ai, open Settings → Usage to see your current session, your weekly limits, and your usage credits, each with a reset time. In Claude Code, run /usage for plan usage bars and a breakdown of what's using them up.
Both show percentages, not message counts. They cover the same shared pool, because claude.ai, the desktop app, and Claude Code use one set of limits.
On claude.ai: Settings → Usage
- Sign in at claude.ai.
- Open Settings, then Usage. You can also go straight to
claude.ai/settings/usage.
What you'll see
- Current session. How much of your five-hour session limit you've used, with "Resets in X hr Y min". If you've been idle, it reads "Starts when a message is sent", meaning no session is running.
- Weekly limits. An All models bar for your weekly limit, plus separate bars for specific models that have their own limit. Each shows when it resets. Your weekly reset is a fixed day and time assigned to your account.
- Usage credits. Pay-as-you-go usage that keeps you going after a limit, with your balance, this month's spend, an optional monthly spend limit, and auto-reload. Turn them on from the web.
Reading it right: a high session bar with a low weekly bar means pause and come back in a few hours. A high weekly bar means pace yourself for the rest of the week, because new sessions won't top it up.
In Claude Code: /usage
Type /usage at the prompt. It also works as /cost or /tokens, and it runs immediately even while Claude is responding. On a Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan you get:
- Plan usage bars for your limits, plus activity stats.
- A usage breakdown of recent usage attributed to skills, subagents, plugins, and individual MCP servers, each as a share of the total.
- Behavior flags for things like long context or cache misses when they account for 10% or more of recent usage, each with a tip.
- Heavy loops, a row for each of the heaviest
/loopor scheduled tasks that ran recently. - A usage-credits row when credits are on, showing this month's spend against your monthly spend limit, or "Unlimited".
Press d or w to switch the breakdown between the last 24 hours and the last 7 days. The breakdown is approximate and built from session history on that machine, so it doesn't include claude.ai or other devices. The plan bars are your account's limits.
Useful related commands
/statusshows your current model, context usage, and session details. It doesn't show plan limits./usage-creditsopens Settings → Usage on claude.ai for Pro and Max subscribers./rate-limit-optionsis the menu for waiting out a limit and continuing automatically.
The Session block at the top of /usage shows a dollar "Total cost". Per Anthropic's docs, that figure is an API-price estimate intended for API users. Pro and Max usage is included in your subscription.
Using the VS Code extension? The same breakdown appears in its Account & usage dialog.

Add to ChromeWhen to check
- Before a big task. A long document review, a Research run, or a big refactor in Claude Code can take a large bite out of a session.
- When a chat gets long. Each reply processes the whole conversation, so long threads use up the session faster. A fresh chat with a short summary is usually cheaper.
- Midweek. Compare your weekly bar with how many days remain until your reset. Being at 60% with one day left is fine. Being at 60% with five days left is not.
- After a warning. If you see "Approaching 5-hour limit." or a 90% warning, check the reset time. See what the 90% warning means.
Already at the limit?
The limit message shows your reset time. Paste it into the reset countdown to get an alert when you're back, or read when Claude limits reset. To understand what the bars measure, see Claude usage limits explained.
Questions people ask
How do I check my Claude usage?
On claude.ai, open Settings → Usage (claude.ai/settings/usage). It shows your current session, weekly limits, and usage credits. In Claude Code, run /usage.
How do I check Claude Code usage?
Run /usage (aliases /cost and /tokens). On a Pro or Max plan it shows your plan usage bars, activity stats, and a breakdown of what's driving your usage. /status shows your model and context usage, not your plan limits.
Can I see how many messages I have left?
No. Claude shows usage as a percentage of each limit, not a message count, because the cost of a message depends on conversation length, attachments, tools, model, and effort level.
Is the dollar cost in Claude Code's /usage what I pay?
Not on Pro or Max. The Session block's cost figure is an API-price estimate meant for API users. Subscribers' usage is included in the plan, and only usage credits are billed on top.
