"Claude reached its tool-use limit for this turn": what it means and how to continue

Last checked: September 15, 2026

This message is not a usage limit. It means Claude took so many tool actions in a single reply (web searches, file reads, connector calls) that the reply was paused.

Press Continue if it's shown, or send a message like "continue", and Claude picks up where it stopped. Your session and weekly limits are a separate matter.

What counts as a "tool use"

A tool use is any action Claude takes beyond writing text, such as:

  • running a web search or fetching a page
  • reading or searching files, including files from connected services
  • calling a connector or MCP server, such as a calendar, drive, or SSH integration
  • running code

A single request like "research these ten companies and compare them" can trigger dozens of these in one reply. That's when you're most likely to see the message.

Why Claude pauses

Anthropic hasn't published the per-turn number for the Claude apps. The closest official explanation is in the Claude API documentation. When server-side tools such as web search run in a loop, the API stops with a pause_turn reason once the loop reaches its iteration limit, which defaults to 10 iterations per request. The documented fix is to send the paused response back so Claude can carry on.

The in-app message behaves the same way. In a public bug report on Anthropic's GitHub, a Max subscriber using Claude Desktop with an MCP integration quoted the exact banner, described a Continue button to resume, and reported pauses after roughly 20 tool calls in one turn. Treat that number as one user's observation, not a published limit.

How to continue

  1. Press Continue in the banner if it's there. Claude resumes the same task.
  2. Or send a short follow-up such as "continue" or "keep going with the remaining companies". This starts a new turn with a fresh tool budget.
  3. Be specific if it stalls again. Tell Claude what's already done and what's left, so it doesn't repeat searches it already ran.

What Claude already found stays in the conversation, so you don't lose the work.

Tool-heavy chats burn through sessions fast.

Every search and file read adds to your usage, and continuing adds more. AI Limit Coach for Chrome shows your session and weekly usage while you work, warns you when you're on pace to run out before the reset, and flags when a long, tool-heavy chat should move to a fresh one. Free.

How to avoid hitting it

  • Split big jobs. Ask for three companies at a time instead of ten, or one folder instead of the whole drive.
  • Point Claude at the source. Naming the file, page, or query up front saves exploratory calls.
  • Turn off tools you don't need. Anthropic's help center suggests toggling off non-critical tools and connectors. Fewer tools means fewer detours and less usage.
  • Batch what you already have. Paste text you've already got instead of asking Claude to go find it.

Questions people ask

Is the tool-use limit the same as my Claude usage limit?

No. The tool-use limit caps how many tool actions Claude takes in a single reply. Your usage limits are the five-hour session and weekly budgets on your plan. Hitting the tool-use limit doesn't mean you're out of usage.

Will I lose my work if Claude hits the tool-use limit?

No. The results Claude already gathered stay in the conversation. Press Continue, or send a message such as "continue", and Claude picks up from there.

Does continuing use more of my usage limit?

Yes. Continuing starts another turn, and tool use such as web search and Research counts toward your plan's usage like any other work.

Can I raise the tool-use limit?

We found no setting for it in the Claude apps, and Anthropic hasn't published the exact per-turn number there. Splitting a big task into smaller requests is the practical way to avoid it.
