When does my Claude limit reset?

Last checked: September 15, 2026

Claude's session limit resets every five hours, and the reset time is shown in your limit message and in Settings → Usage. The weekly limit resets at a fixed day and time assigned to your account, and that day doesn't depend on when you subscribed.

Waiting out a session won't clear a weekly limit.

Start a reset countdown

First: which limit did you hit?

Look at the reset time in the message:

  • A time later today, such as "5-hour limit reached - resets 3:45pm", means the session limit. You'll be back within five hours.
  • A day of the week, or a time more than five hours away, almost always means the weekly limit. You'll be back on that day.

Paste the message into the countdown tool. It reads the reset time for you and can remind you by browser alert, calendar event, or email.

When the session limit resets

Anthropic's Pro and Max plan pages say the session-based limit resets every five hours. Settings → Usage shows this in two ways:

  • "Resets in X hr Y min" under Current session, while a session is running.
  • "Starts when a message is sent" when you've been idle, which means no window is running and the next one starts with your next message.

So the reset time isn't tied to midnight or a clock hour. It depends on when your current session began. For the exact minute, trust the time in your limit message or on the Usage page rather than working it out yourself.

When the weekly limit resets

Pro and Max have a weekly limit that applies across all models. Per Anthropic:

  • It resets at a fixed time each week assigned to your account.
  • That reset day and time stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription began.
  • You get your full weekly allowance each cycle.
  • Your next reset time is shown in Settings → Usage.

There's no single reset day for everyone, so a friend's "mine resets Thursday" tells you nothing about your account. Some models also have their own bar in Settings → Usage, each with its own reset time.

How to find your exact reset time

  1. The limit message. It includes the reset time, for example "5-hour limit reached - resets [time]".
  2. Settings → Usage on claude.ai. It shows the current session and weekly limits, each with a reset time.
  3. Claude Code. Run /usage to see your plan usage bars. The "You've hit your session limit" and "You've hit your weekly limit" messages also show when the window resets.

Things that don't reset your limit

  • Starting a new chat. Limits belong to your account, not the conversation.
  • Switching between claude.ai, the desktop app, and Claude Code. They share the same limits.
  • Switching models after a session or weekly limit. Those limits apply across all models. Switching only helps after a model-specific limit, such as "You've hit your Opus limit".
  • Waiting five hours when it's the weekly limit.

Can you keep working before the reset?

  • Usage credits. On Pro and Max you can turn on pay-as-you-go usage credits in Settings → Usage, billed at standard API rates, with an optional monthly spend limit. The message then reads "5-hour limit resets [time] - continuing with usage credits." See usage limits and extra usage.
  • Upgrade. Max gives 5x or 20x Pro's usage per session. See Pro vs Max.
  • Let Claude Code wait for you. In Claude Code v2.1.234 or later, signed in with a claude.ai subscription, an interactive session that hits a usage limit mid-task waits and continues on its own after the reset, as long as you keep the session open. It won't start this wait by itself if the reset is more than 24 hours away. Use /rate-limit-options to choose.

Questions people ask

How often does Claude usage reset?

The session limit resets every five hours. The weekly limit resets once a week, at a fixed day and time assigned to your account.

Does everyone's weekly limit reset on the same day?

No. Anthropic assigns each account a fixed weekly reset day and time. Check Settings → Usage to see yours.

Does starting a new chat reset my Claude limit?

No. Limits apply to your whole account across claude.ai, Claude Code, and the desktop app, so a new chat doesn't reset them. A new chat does make each message cheaper than continuing a very long one.

Why is my Claude reset time days away?

You've most likely hit the weekly limit rather than the session limit. The weekly limit only clears on your account's reset day, so waiting five hours won't help. Usage credits or a bigger plan are the ways to keep working before then.

Don't hit the wall in the first place.

AI Limit Coach warns you when you're on pace to run out before the reset, spreads your weekly usage into a %/day budget, and notifies you at 75% and 90%. Free, and your usage numbers never leave your browser.
