"You've used 90% of your session limit": what it means and what to do

Last checked: September 15, 2026

The warning means you've used about 90% of the usage your plan allows in the current five-hour session. You're not blocked yet, but one long reply or a big task can take you to 100%, and then Claude stops until the session resets, unless you've turned on usage credits.

Check the reset time in Settings → Usage (or run /usage in Claude Code), then spend what's left on the thing that matters most.

What the warning is telling you

Claude plans measure usage in five-hour sessions, and the session limit resets every five hours. The warning is about that session only:

  • It's not your weekly limit. Settings → Usage shows the weekly limit as a separate bar, and it can be much lower or higher.
  • It covers everything on your account: claude.ai, the desktop app, and Claude Code share one pool.
  • The last 10% doesn't equal a fixed number of messages. A reply in a long chat, with attachments, or on a bigger model uses far more than a short question in a new chat.

Wording varies by app and version. Anthropic's help center lists "Approaching 5-hour limit." as the warning in the Claude apps, and many Claude Code users report seeing "You've used 90% of your session limit." Both mean the same thing: you're near the ceiling for this session.

What to do in the next few minutes

  1. Check when you're back. Settings → Usage shows "Resets in X hr Y min" under Current session. If that's 20 minutes away, you may just want to pause. If it's four hours, plan around it. The reset countdown can alert you.
  2. Finish the one thing that matters. Ask for the final version of the draft, the fix, or the answer you came for, not another round of exploration.
  3. Get a handoff summary now. Ask Claude to summarize the goal, decisions made, and next steps while you still have room. After the reset, paste it into a fresh chat. That's cheaper than continuing a long thread, and your place isn't lost.
  4. Skip the expensive stuff. Hold off on large file uploads, Research, web searches, and higher effort settings until after the reset.
  5. In Claude Code, save state cheaply. Commit your work and have Claude write short notes on where it is. Don't run /compact on a huge context right now, because compacting reads the whole conversation and is a large request itself.
  6. Decide on usage credits before you hit 100%. If you can't wait, turn on usage credits in Settings → Usage and set a monthly spend limit. Leave auto-reload off if you want a hard stop, because in our testing it can keep charging past the monthly cap.

Get the warning earlier, with time to act.

AI Limit Coach for Chrome notifies you at 75% as well as 90%, and warns you when you're on pace to run out before the reset, so you find out with an hour to spare instead of one message. When a chat has grown expensive, it builds the handoff summary for you in one click. Free.

What happens at 100%

  • In the Claude apps you'll see "5-hour limit reached - resets [time]" and can't send more messages until then. With usage credits on, you'll see "5-hour limit resets [time] - continuing with usage credits." and keep going on pay-as-you-go.
  • In Claude Code you'll see "You've hit your session limit" with the reset time. It applies across all models, so /model won't get you around it. In v2.1.234 and later, an open interactive session that stops mid-task waits and continues automatically after the reset.

If the reset time in your message is days away rather than hours, you've hit the weekly limit instead. See when Claude limits reset.

Why you got to 90% so fast

  • One long conversation. Each reply processes the whole conversation so far, so the cost per message keeps growing.
  • Attachments and tools. Long files, Research, web search, and artifacts all add usage.
  • Model and effort. Bigger models and higher effort levels use more.
  • Claude Code habits. A session left open all day resends a big context with every request. Coming back after a break longer than the cache lifetime reprocesses the whole context, and scheduled tasks keep firing while you're away. /usage flags behaviors behind 10% or more of your recent usage.

If this happens most days, you may have outgrown your plan. See Claude Pro vs Max.

Questions people ask

Does 90% of my session limit mean I've used 90% of my week?

No. The session limit and the weekly limit are separate. Settings → Usage shows a Current session bar and a separate Weekly limits bar, and the warning is about the session.

How long until my Claude session limit resets?

Session limits reset every five hours. The exact time left is shown as "Resets in X hr Y min" under Current session in Settings → Usage, and in Claude Code with /usage.

What happens when I reach 100% of my session limit?

Claude blocks new messages until the reset time shown in the message, unless you have usage credits turned on, in which case it continues and bills the credits. Switching models won't get around a session limit, because it applies across all models.

Will starting a new chat reset my session limit?

No. The limit belongs to your account and is shared across claude.ai, Claude Code, and the desktop app. A new chat only makes each message cheaper than continuing a very long one.
