Claude usage credits: how they work and what they cost

Usage credits let you keep working after you hit a plan limit, instead of waiting for the reset. They're pay-as-you-go at standard API rates, billed separately from your subscription, and you can set a monthly spend limit when you turn them on.

They were previously called "extra usage", and Anthropic's own links still use that name in places.

What credits do

On Pro and Max, a limit normally stops you until the window resets. With credits enabled, Claude carries on and charges the credit balance instead. The apps say so plainly when it happens, with wording like "5-hour limit reached… continuing with usage credits."

Two things stay true when credits are on:

Your plan allowance is used first. Credits only start once you're over a limit.
Credit spend is real money at API rates, not part of your subscription.

Turning them on, and the settings that matter

Open Settings → Usage on the web. Credits can't be switched on from the mobile app.
Set a monthly spend limit, or choose unlimited. A number you'd be comfortable seeing on a card statement is the right one.
Decide about auto-reload, which tops your balance back up automatically whenever it runs low.

The setting that catches people out: a monthly spend limit and auto-reload are separate controls. Auto-reload buys another batch of credits every time the balance dips, so it can keep charging repeatedly. We watched an auto-reload rule fire nine times in a single day on one account. If you want a hard ceiling, check both settings, and look at Settings → Billing for what's actually been charged.

Anthropic also applies a $2,000 daily limit on credit usage, and sells prepaid bundles that save up to 30%, for up to $2,000 a month. In Japan, credits purchased from September 10, 2026 expire six months after purchase.

Credits or a bigger plan?

A rough rule, based on how the prices compare:

You run over once or twice a week: credits with a modest spend limit usually cost less than the $80 a month jump from Pro to Max 5x.
You run over most days: a bigger plan almost always costs less than paying API rates again and again, and it's predictable.
You run over on one big project, then stop: credits fit that shape better than a subscription you'd forget to cancel.

Credits and Fable models

On Pro, Anthropic's Fable models are available only through usage credits. On Max they're included, up to half of your weekly limit. If you're on Pro and experimenting with Fable, that spend comes out of credits rather than your plan.
