Claude plan calculator: Pro, Max 5x or Max 20x?

Last checked: September 15, 2026. US list prices.

Most plan advice is guesswork because Anthropic doesn't publish message counts. This calculator avoids guessing: you enter the percentages from your own Settings → Usage page, and it rescales them with the multipliers Anthropic does publish, so you can see where your real usage lands on every plan.

Session projections use Anthropic's published per-session multipliers. Anthropic does not publish how the weekly limit scales between plans, so the weekly column assumes the same ratio. Treat it as a rough guide and check your real weekly bar after switching.

How the maths works

Anthropic describes plan sizes as multipliers on a single five-hour session:

  • Pro: at least five times the Free plan's usage per session.
  • Max 5x: five times Pro's usage per session, at $100 a month.
  • Max 20x: twenty times Pro's usage per session, at $200 a month.

So the same work that fills 180% of a Pro session (in other words, you ran out and would have used most of another session) fills about 36% of a Max 5x session, and about 9% of a Max 20x session. The calculator marks a plan as comfortable when your peak lands at 80% or less, because usage is uneven and a plan that fits exactly will still cut you off on your busiest day.

Dividing price by multiplier gives cost per unit of usage: $20 for Pro, $20 for Max 5x, and $10 for Max 20x. Max 20x is the cheapest usage per dollar, but only if you use it. Buying headroom you never touch is the most expensive option of all.

Before you upgrade, check it isn't avoidable

Plenty of limit trouble is self-inflicted, and fixing it is free:

  • Long chats cost more every turn. Claude re-reads the whole conversation on each reply, so a long thread charges you for all of it again and again. Carry a short summary into a fresh chat instead.
  • Trim context in Claude Code with /compact and /clear, and keep CLAUDE.md short.
  • Match the model to the job. A lighter model for quick questions leaves the heavy one for work that needs it.
  • Watch the clock. Starting a big task ten minutes before a reset wastes what's left of the window. See when Claude limits reset.

If you've done all that and still run out several times a week, the plan really is too small.

Questions people ask

How does this calculator work?

It rescales the percentages you enter using the multipliers Anthropic publishes: Max 5x gives five times Pro's usage per five-hour session and Max 20x gives twenty times. Using 180% of a Pro session means about 36% of a Max 5x session.

Where do I find my usage percentages?

Open claude.ai, then Settings, then Usage. It shows a current session bar and a weekly bar, each as a percentage used. In Claude Code, run /usage. Our guide on how to check Claude usage has the details.

Which Claude plan gives the most usage per dollar?

By Anthropic's per-session multipliers, Max 20x does: twenty times Pro's session usage for ten times Pro's price, which is about half the cost per unit of usage of Pro or Max 5x. That only holds if you actually use it.

Is this calculator official?

No. AI Limit Coach is an independent tool and isn't affiliated with Anthropic. The calculator uses published prices and per-session multipliers, plus the numbers you enter. Anthropic doesn't publish message counts or a weekly multiplier, so treat weekly projections as an estimate.
